The Executive Board of the Student Union of the University of Indonesia (BEM UI), in an Instagram post via @bemui_official, said Indonesia is a wealthy country, yet its people have remained far from prosperity.
It also stated that Indonesia is a large nation, but its citizens are still struggling with hunger.
“Recently, Indonesia’s economy has collapsed. However, unfortunately, the government has only worsened the situation,” the statement read.
It further claimed that fiscal policy is “leaking”, the independence of Bank Indonesia has been undermined, and the government’s public communication falls far short of acceptable standards.
UI student representatives also said the government has been denying current conditions while degrading public criticism and social movements.
“Not only that, state apparatus is being used as a tool to silence those who speak out,” the statement added.

It pointed to populist government programmes that it claims are ineffective and benefit officials, such as MBG and the Merah Putih Cooperative initiative.
It further alleged that the government continues to promote and maintain these programmes while misleading people in remote areas about their supposed benefits.
