Cabinet Reshuffle Rumours Grow as Questions Swirl Over Purbaya's Future

TheIndonesia.co - Speculation over the future of Indonesian Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has intensified amid reports that President Prabowo Subianto is considering a cabinet reshuffle as early as Monday.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, former finance minister Muhammad Chatib Basri has emerged as a leading candidate should Mr Prabowo decide to make changes to his economic team.

The reports come as investors closely monitor Indonesia's economic outlook, with the rupiah facing renewed pressure and policymakers seeking to maintain market confidence.

Two sources told Suara.com that Mr Prabowo has been reviewing options for key economic posts, including the finance ministry.

"There's a possibility of a cabinet reshuffle on Monday. The President has been considering several names, including Mr Chatib Basri for the finance minister position," one source said.

Attention Turns to Purbaya

While rumours have focused on Mr Chatib's potential return to government, much of the attention in Jakarta has centred on what lies ahead for Mr Purbaya.

The economist was appointed finance minister as part of Mr Prabowo's economic team and has played a key role in managing fiscal policy during a period marked by global economic uncertainty.

Sources insist that, even if he leaves the finance ministry, Mr Purbaya is unlikely to be sidelined.

Instead, he is reportedly being considered for one of Indonesia's most influential economic positions: governor of Bank Indonesia.

The role is currently held by Perry Warjiyo.

Such a move would place Mr Purbaya at the centre of Indonesia's monetary policymaking and could signal an effort by the government to maintain continuity within its broader economic leadership.

Chatib's Return Fuels Speculation

Rumours of a reshuffle gathered pace after Mr Chatib reportedly cut short a stay in the United States and returned to Jakarta on Friday.

The former minister has been serving as a visiting fellow at Harvard Kennedy School.

According to a source familiar with his schedule, Mr Chatib cancelled plans to travel within the US before flying back to Indonesia.

He is expected to meet former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at Cikeas and is also reportedly scheduled to hold talks with President Prabowo.

Mr Chatib served as finance minister between 2013 and 2014 under Mr Yudhoyono and remains one of Indonesia's most respected economists.

Palace Seeks to Quell Rumours

Despite mounting speculation, the presidential palace has denied that any cabinet changes have been formally planned.

Speaking on Thursday, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi dismissed reports of an imminent reshuffle.

"There are no plans. There is no plan for a replacement," he said.

Yet the combination of Mr Chatib's sudden return, persistent market concerns and reports of discussions around Mr Purbaya's future have kept rumours alive.

Whether Monday brings a reshuffle or not, the debate has already highlighted a broader issue facing Mr Prabowo's administration: how best to position Indonesia's economic leadership at a time when investors are looking for stability, policy credibility and clear direction.
