TheIndonesia.co - The Indonesian government is pushing forward with plans to develop domestically produced electric vehicles, including an electric version of the Maung tactical vehicle, manufactured by PT Pindad. This initiative was discussed in a recent limited meeting led by Minister of Investment and Downstreaming and head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Rosan Roeslani, with President Prabowo Subianto.
According to Antara News Agency, Roeslani highlighted the potential for the Maung tactical vehicle to be adapted into an electric vehicle, aligning with broader strategies to strengthen the electric vehicle (EV) industry in Indonesia. The meeting also brought together key figures, including Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, PT Pindad President Director Prof. Sigit Puji Santoso, Prof. Brian Yuliarto from Bandung Institute of Technology, and Pandu Patria Sjahrir from PT TBS Energi Tbk.

The government is focused on fostering both foreign and domestic investments in EV development, with a particular emphasis on involving national defense equipment manufacturer PT Pindad. The electric Maung is expected to accelerate Indonesia's renewable energy transition and encourage a more eco-friendly direction for the national automotive sector.
Roeslani reiterated the country’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, with aspirations to reach this goal even sooner. PT Pindad, based in Bandung, is already developing the Morino EV, a light, four-wheeled electric tactical vehicle designed for high-mobility operations. The Morino EV boasts a 160 HP/125kW electric power drive, a top speed of 100 km/h, and a 292V battery.
On January 9, 2025, Minister Sjamsoeddin reviewed the Morino EV’s development and the readiness of the Maung’s third electric version, which is expected to be inaugurated soon. This move underscores Indonesia’s commitment to advancing clean technology and positioning itself as a key player in the global EV market.
