TheIndonesia.co - The Jakarta High Court has scheduled the first appeal hearing in the alleged corruption case surrounding the Education Ministry's digitalisation programme, involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) licences between 2019 and 2022.

Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology Nadiem Makarim is the defendant in the case.

The first appeal hearing is set to take place on 5 August 2026. The panel will be chaired by Hardi Mulyana, with Catur Irianto and Hotma Maya Marbun serving as associate judges.

"The first hearing is scheduled for Wednesday (5 August 2026)," Jakarta High Court spokesperson Catur Irianto told reporters on Wednesday.

The appeal follows a ruling by the Jakarta Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court, which sentenced Makarim to 10 years' imprisonment after finding him guilty of corruption in connection with the Chromebook procurement programme.

The court also imposed a fine of Rp1 billion, payable within one month of the verdict becoming legally binding, with a possible one-month extension.

If the fine is not paid within the prescribed period, Makarim's assets or income may be seized and auctioned to recover the outstanding amount. Should the proceeds prove insufficient or seizure be impossible, the unpaid fine will be replaced with an additional 190 days in prison.

In addition, the court ordered Makarim to pay Rp809.6 billion (approximately US$50 million) in restitution.

"If the defendant fails to pay the replacement money within one month after the verdict becomes legally binding, the prosecutor may confiscate and auction his assets to recover the amount," the presiding judge said.

If Makarim's assets are insufficient to cover the restitution, he will face an additional five-year prison sentence in lieu of payment.
