TheIndonesia.co - Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has once again transferred the detention status of former Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, also known as Gus Yaqut, back to a KPK detention facility.

The agency had previously moved Yaqut from KPK custody to house arrest on Thursday (19 March 2026).

“Today, Monday 23 March 2026, the KPK has carried out a transfer in the type of detention for suspect YCQ in the alleged corruption case related to the hajj quota, from house arrest back to detention at the KPK facility,” KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo told reporters on Monday (23 March 2026).

According to Budi, Yaqut must undergo a series of examinations before being returned to detention, including a medical check-up.

“At present, a medical examination by doctors is still ongoing at Bhayangkara Hospital TK I R. Said Sukanto in East Jakarta,” he said.

Budi added that the investigation would continue in accordance with legal procedures, with the aim of completing the case file and moving it to the prosecution stage.

“On this occasion, we would also like to thank the Indonesian public for continuing to oversee and support the KPK in handling this case,” he said.

Previously, the KPK confirmed that investigators had approved a request to transfer Yaqut’s detention from custody to house arrest.

“The investigators transferred the detention status of suspect YCQ from KPK detention to house arrest starting Thursday evening (19 March),” Budi said on Saturday (21 March 2026).

The decision followed a request submitted by Yaqut’s family on 17 March 2026. The KPK reviewed and granted the request in line with Article 108 of Law No. 20 of 2025 on the Criminal Procedure Code.

“The implementation was carried out by changing the type of detention,” Budi explained, adding that strict supervision and security measures remained in place during the period of house arrest.

The KPK stressed that the temporary transfer complied with all applicable procedures for investigation and detention, and that the legal process against Yaqut would proceed as required under the law.

The anti-graft body has named two suspects in the case: Yaqut and his former special staff member, Ishfah Abidal Aziz, also known as Gus Alex.

Both are accused in a corruption case related to the allocation of hajj quotas and the organisation of the pilgrimage within the Ministry of Religious Affairs for the 2023–2024 period.

They are suspected of violating Articles 2(1) and 3 in conjunction with Article 18 of Indonesia’s Anti-Corruption Law, as well as Article 55(1) of the Criminal Code.
