Indonesian Navy Deploys Marines for Flood Evacuations in Jakarta Area

TheIndonesia.co - The Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) has mobilized soldiers from its Marine Corps to assist with the evacuation of residents impacted by severe flooding in the Greater Jakarta region.

According to Antara News Agency, in a statement issued on Tuesday in Jakarta, Commodore I Made Wira Hady, head of TNI-AL's Information Office, confirmed that the marine personnel have been deployed to several flood-stricken areas in East Jakarta and Bekasi, West Java.

He noted that floodwaters in these areas have reached up to two meters in some locations.

The rescue teams are prioritizing the evacuation of vulnerable individuals, such as children and the elderly, from submerged homes using motorized inflatable boats. These evacuees will be transported to nearby emergency shelters where medical treatment will be available.

"We have also deployed medical teams to facilitate the evacuation process and ensure access to necessary healthcare for those affected by the floods," Commodore Hady said.

The commodore emphasized that the marine officers will continue to stay in the flooded regions to provide ongoing assistance to those in need.

Bekasi Flood or "Banjir Bekasi" was the severe flooding that recently struck Bekasi, a city located in West Java, Indonesia, following an intense downpour beginning on March 3, 2025. The torrential rainfall overwhelmed local rivers, leading to widespread flooding across several sub-districts.

Many residential areas and public facilities were submerged, causing significant disruption to daily life. The flooding was so severe that parts of the city were nearly "drowned," with water levels rising rapidly and creating a challenging emergency situation for local authorities. The continued rainfall and overflowing rivers left parts of the city without power, while evacuation efforts and relief operations are still underway to support the affected residents.
