Bali Airport to Close for Nyepi Day Amid Eid Holiday Rush

TheIndonesia.co - Bali typically sees a surge in tourist arrivals during the extended Eid holiday, but this year, an exceptional situation is set to unfold. I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport will close for the entirety of Nyepi Day, which falls on March 29.

According to Antara News Agency, Faik Fahmi, CEO of state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia, confirmed on January 24 that "all flights will be suspended during Nyepi." The closure coincides with the expected peak of the Eid al-Fitr homecoming period, which is anticipated around March 31.

With Nyepi falling just two days before Eid, Fahmi emphasized the importance of coordinating closely with relevant authorities to navigate the challenges of the holiday period. "We are working with stakeholders and ministries to develop policies to manage this situation," he said.

Travelers planning to visit Bali may be advised to adjust their travel dates, either arriving before or after Eid to avoid the airport closure.

This isn't the first time the airport has closed for Nyepi Day. It also shut down in 2002 when Nyepi coincided with Eid al-Adha. Fahmi expressed confidence in the airport’s ability to handle operations effectively, with measures already under review.

Discussions with the Ministry of Transportation are ongoing to finalize school holiday schedules and transportation arrangements for the peak travel season. "In 2002, Eid prayers were carried out respectfully, with minimal vehicle movement, reflecting the spirit of mutual respect that will guide our decisions this year," Fahmi concluded.
