TheIndonesia.co - The Aceh Travel Mart 4.0, hosted by the Aceh Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism in collaboration with the Indonesian Tourism Business Association (ASPPI) Aceh, is set to welcome over 100 tourism industry players from various provinces across Indonesia and abroad. Scheduled for May 19–22, 2025, the event aims to boost Aceh's presence as a world-class tourist destination.
“More than a hundred tourism operators will participate in the Aceh Travel Mart. It’s a marketplace connecting buyers and sellers of tourism packages,” said Almuniza Kamal, Head of the Aceh Department of Culture and Tourism, on Monday in Banda Aceh, according to Antara News Agency.
This year’s attendees include travel professionals from provinces such as North Sulawesi, West and East Nusa Tenggara, West Java, Riau, North and West Sumatra, the Riau Islands, Jakarta, South Kalimantan, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung, Central Java, East Java, and Banten. International participants from Malaysia and Thailand are also confirmed—a notable increase from the 2023 edition.
According to Azwani Awi, Chair of ASPPI Aceh, the event is designed to enhance both domestic and international tourist arrivals in Indonesia’s westernmost province.
“In this travel mart, Acehnese tourism businesses will offer exclusive travel packages to external buyers. We hope these offerings gain strong interest and translate into real visits,” said Azwani.
Tour packages promoted include marine getaways in Weh Island (Sabang), Banyak Islands (Aceh Singkil), and Simeulue Island, adventure tourism such as white-water rafting and Lake Laut Tawar in Central Aceh, as well as culinary tours spotlighting iconic Acehnese dishes like kuah beulangong, ayam tangkap, mie Aceh, and Aceh coffee.
Beyond the transaction floor, delegates will also be taken on cultural excursions, including a visit to the Astaka Diraja (Meureuhom Daya Royal Palace) in Lamno, Aceh Jaya, where the traditional seumeuleung (guest-welcoming) ceremony is held. Lamno is also known for its blue-eyed residents, descendants of Portuguese settlers—an intriguing facet of Aceh’s diverse history.
Discover Aceh: Indonesia’s Best-Kept Secret
While the travel mart signals Aceh’s readiness to welcome the world, the province itself remains an undiscovered jewel in the Indonesian archipelago—rich in natural beauty, cultural heritage, and historical depth.
Pulau Weh – The Dive Capital of Western Indonesia
A short ferry ride from Banda Aceh, Pulau Weh is a diver’s dream. Its waters are home to vibrant coral reefs and marine biodiversity that rival Indonesia’s best-known dive spots. Popular sites like Rubiah Sea Garden, Sophie Rickmers Wreck, and The Canyon attract divers year-round. The island also offers tranquil beaches, volcano-fed hot springs, and a warm, welcoming local culture.
Kilometer Nol – The Edge of a Nation
Just north of Pulau Weh lies Kilometer Nol, Indonesia’s westernmost point. This landmark symbolizes the start of the Indonesian archipelago and offers stunning ocean views—especially at sunset. It’s a bucket-list destination for travelers wanting to say they’ve stood at the edge of the nation.
Pulau Banyak – An Archipelago of Solitude
Located in Aceh Singkil, the Banyak Islands are perfect for those seeking a peaceful, natural escape. With dozens of untouched islands, travelers can island-hop, kayak, snorkel, or relax in solitude. The waters are crystal clear, the sands are sugar white, and the hospitality is heartfelt.
Lake Laut Tawar – Highland Escape in Takengon
Set amidst the cool highlands of Central Aceh, Lake Laut Tawar is a freshwater paradise bordered by mountains and pine forests. The lake is also central to Aceh Gayo coffee culture, offering tours of coffee plantations and local roasteries. Visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, and cultural interactions with the Gayo community.
Aceh’s Cultural Mosaic and Legendary Cuisine
From the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque to the Aceh Tsunami Museum, Aceh’s cities reflect a deep-rooted history. Local dishes tell their own stories through bold spices and unique preparation—mie Aceh, with its fragrant curry base, ayam tangkap, and kopi sanger, sweetened with condensed milk, are just a taste of the province’s offerings.
Lamno – A Village with Portuguese Echoes
In Lamno, the blend of cultures is visible in the people—some of whom have blue eyes and European features due to historical intermarriage with Portuguese sailors. Here, traditions like seumeuleung not only attract tourists but preserve the spirit of ancient hospitality.
The Future of Tourism in Aceh
Aceh Travel Mart 4.0 is expected to surpass the Rp2.3 billion in transactions recorded during its previous edition, with renewed interest from both domestic and international players.
“Aceh Travel Mart is a biennial event that plays a strategic role in boosting tourist arrivals. With our cultural richness and unmatched natural beauty, Aceh is ready to welcome the world,” Azwani concluded.
With growing momentum, Aceh stands poised to claim its rightful place on the map of Southeast Asia’s most unforgettable travel destinations. For those seeking authenticity, adventure, and awe-inspiring landscapes, the Land of Rencong awaits.
