Indonesia's openness to international cooperation that supports the advancement of national culture.
Borobudur continues to inspire awe and admiration.
TheIndonesia.co - Central Java is set to host an extraordinary international event in 2026 that blends outdoor adventure, global camaraderie, and cultural exploration: the Prambanan Mendut Interhash 2026.
Scheduled for May 8th–10th, 2026, the event will take place across iconic sites in Magelang and Yogyakarta, including the Borobudur area and the world-famous Prambanan Temple complex.
Thousands of Participants from Across the Globe
As of June 13th, 2025, the event has already attracted 1,865 registrants from 34 countries, with more expected in the coming months. The organizing committee, represented by Prasetyo Ari Wibowo, anticipates a steady rise in participants as the event draws nearer.
“This is a huge opportunity for Central Java,” Prasetyo said during a meeting with Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi in Semarang, according to Antara News Agency.
“Not only will it showcase our local potential, but it will also deliver a significant economic boost to the region.”
A Tourism and Economic Opportunity
One of the standout benefits of the Interhash event is its capacity to generate extended stays. While the average tourist in Central Java typically spends about two and a half days in the region, Interhash participants tend to stay up to ten days.
This longer duration has the potential to triple the impact on local economies, benefiting accommodations, culinary businesses, and small enterprises offering traditional crafts and souvenirs.
Governor Ahmad Luthfi expressed full support for the initiative, stating, “We must market this event globally. It’s a great chance to position Central Java as a prime international tourism destination.”
He also mentioned plans to collaborate with international event service providers, including a French company he met during a recent visit to the Riau Islands Province.
What Is Interhash?
Interhash is a non-competitive global event organized by the Hash House Harriers (HHH), an international running and social group known for blending trail running with social gatherings and cultural experiences. The 2026 edition, named Prambanan Mendut Interhash, will serve as a massive reunion for HHH members and other running enthusiasts.
Participants will engage in various trail runs across Central Java's scenic landscapes. Routes are designed for all skill levels, with multiple distance categories:
These courses will traverse lush valleys, rolling hills, rural villages, and ancient cultural heritage sites, offering runners not just a physical challenge but also a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Java’s natural and historical beauty.
Highlight Events and Cultural Festivities
The Interhash 2026 program will feature more than just running. The three-day festival includes an exciting lineup of cultural and social events, such as:
These elements turn Interhash into more than a sporting event; it’s a cultural exchange, a party, and an unforgettable travel experience all rolled into one.
Discovering Prambanan and Mendut: Cultural Jewels of Java
No visit to Central Java would be complete without exploring its legendary temples — especially Prambanan and Mendut — both of which are featured in the Interhash itinerary.
Prambanan Temple: A Masterpiece of Hindu Architecture
Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 9th century, it is dedicated to the Trimurti: Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver), and Shiva (the destroyer). The central towering spires, particularly the 47-meter-tall Shiva temple, dominate the landscape and inspire awe.
Visitors can wander through intricate bas-reliefs depicting stories from the Ramayana epic. The temple complex also hosts the Ramayana Ballet, a dramatic performance staged under the stars, with Prambanan’s illuminated spires serving as a breathtaking backdrop.
Travel tip: Visit in the late afternoon and stay for the sunset. The view of the temple bathed in golden light is unforgettable. Tickets for the Ramayana Ballet are available seasonally.
Mendut Temple: A Serene Buddhist Sanctuary
Located just a few kilometers from Borobudur, Mendut Temple is often overshadowed by its larger neighbor but offers a tranquil and equally fascinating experience. This 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple houses a magnificent 3-meter-tall statue of Buddha seated in a posture of dharma teaching, flanked by statues of Bodhisattvas Avalokitesvara and Vajrapani.
Unlike Prambanan's towering architecture, Mendut is more modest in scale but rich in symbolic carvings and spiritual significance. It is part of a ceremonial procession route connecting with Pawon and Borobudur temples, especially during Vesak, the Buddhist day of enlightenment celebration.
Travel tip: Combine your Mendut visit with a guided bicycle tour from Borobudur, passing through quiet villages and rice fields. It's a peaceful and immersive way to experience rural Java.
