Tanjung Bira has long been recognized as one of the flagship tourist destinations in Bulukumba Regency, and indeed, throughout South Sulawesi. Its pristine white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and vibrant underwater life make it a magnet for both domestic and international visitors.

But it's more than just a beautiful beach; it's a gateway to unique cultural experiences, particularly the Phinisi shipbuilding traditions of the Konjo ethnic group, renowned for their masterful craftsmanship in wooden vessels.

 

Andi Herfida Muchtardis, Head of the Bulukumba Regency PKK (Pembinaan Kesejahteraan Keluarga or The Family Welfare and Empowerment Organization) Team, emphasized the critical role of MSMEs in supporting this destination.

"Tanjung Bira is one of the leading tourist destinations in Bulukumba Regency and South Sulawesi in general, which is why the arrangement of MSMEs is very important, as they are a pillar of the destination," she stated during her visit to Bira Beach, according to Antara News Agency.

Her words underscore the growing recognition that the vibrancy and sustainability of a tourist spot are intrinsically linked to the well-being and organization of its local economy.

During peak periods, such as the end of May 2025, Tanjung Bira saw an influx of over 1,000 domestic visitors. While this increase is undoubtedly positive for the local economy, it also presents challenges. The influx of vehicles can lead to chaotic parking, and street vendors, eager to capitalize on the crowds, might set up stalls in ways that obstruct pedestrian flow and detract from the overall aesthetic. These issues, if left unaddressed, can significantly impact visitor comfort and the perception of the destination.

Collaborative Efforts for a Better Visitor Experience

Recognizing these challenges, the local authorities, led by PKK Team, have taken proactive steps. Andi Herfida Muchtardis, along with representatives from the Transportation Agency and the Public Order Agency (Satuan Polisi Pamong Praja), conducted direct field visits to engage with the MSME actors and street vendors. Their approach is not punitive but educational, aiming to foster a shared understanding of responsibility.

"To avoid parking disorder and haphazard stall arrangements that could affect visitor comfort, we went down together with the Transportation Agency and the Public Order Agency to provide education," said Herfida. This collaborative spirit is key. Instead of imposing strict regulations immediately, they chose an educative approach, helping vendors to organize their stalls neatly and assisting with parking management to ensure smoother traffic flow.

The underlying message is clear: everyone has a role to play in maintaining Bulukumba's tourism image.

"We all have a role in safeguarding the image of Bulukumba's tourism. If the tourist area is clean and well-arranged, tourists will feel at home and want to come back," Herfida stressed. This highlights a critical understanding that visitor satisfaction is directly linked to the environment they experience, and that cleanliness and order are powerful magnets for repeat visits and positive word-of-mouth.

The PKK Team actively encourages MSME actors in Tanjung Bira to take ownership of environmental cleanliness and to arrange their stalls neatly. This involvement from the vendors themselves in maintaining tidiness will significantly enhance Tanjung Bira's appeal to tourists, directly impacting the economic sustainability of the local community. Nurlia, one of the MSME entrepreneurs, confirmed the positive reception of these initiatives.

"If everything is well-arranged and cleanliness is guaranteed, visitors will feel happy and comfortable, and then leave with a good impression, surely they will come back," she shared, echoing the sentiment that a well-maintained environment directly translates to returning customers and a thriving local economy.

Private Car/Taxi: This is the most convenient option, especially if you're traveling with a group or have a lot of luggage. The drive from Makassar to Tanjung Bira takes approximately 4-5 hours, depending on traffic. You can arrange for a private car with a driver through your hotel or a travel agency in Makassar.

Shared Minibus (Travel): Several travel agencies operate shared minibuses (often called "Travel") that depart from Makassar to Bulukumba/Tanjung Bira daily. This is a more economical option, but departures might be less flexible, and the journey could take longer due to multiple stops.
