TheIndonesia.co - Tucked away in the peaceful hills of Kampung Narimbang Dalam (Kanada) in Rangkasbitung, Banten Province, Gua Maria Bukit Kanada has become a cherished destination for many Indonesian Catholics. Each year, and especially during long holidays like the Ascension of Jesus Christ in 2025, this Marian grotto welcomes thousands of visitors who come to pray, reflect, and find peace in its tranquil surroundings.

During a recent visit over the Ascension weekend, according to Antara News Agency, Antonio, a pilgrim from Tangerang, shared his experience.

“We came here with our family to spend the long holiday in a meaningful way, by making a pilgrimage to Gua Maria Bukit Kanada Rangkasbitung,” he said.

Antonio and his family have visited the grotto multiple times. For them, it’s not just a destination—it’s a peaceful retreat that refreshes the soul. “We feel calm and at peace whenever we visit here,” he added, describing how the natural beauty of the place, with its tall trees and quiet atmosphere, helps him connect more deeply with his faith.

The site holds special meaning for many. Imakulata, a 40-year-old woman from West Jakarta, traveled with her church group to take part in the closing Mass of the Marian month. For her and many others, the grotto is a regular pilgrimage site during religious observances. “We often come here during religious occasions to join in prayer and worship,” she said. The Mass that day was solemnly celebrated under the spiritual guidance of clergy from the Diocese of Bogor, which oversees the shrine.

On that same weekend, the site was filled with people—around 2,500 visitors, according to Eva, a staff member in charge of visitor data.

“The place was quite full, with many pilgrims arriving in buses and private vehicles for the Marian month’s closing Mass,” she reported.

The mix of individual travelers and large church groups created a vibrant yet reverent atmosphere. For many of them, Gua Maria Bukit Kanada has become a spiritual home—a place to find calm, offer prayers, and simply be still.

Getting to Gua Maria Bukit Kanada is quite straightforward, even for those relying on public transportation from Jakarta. The easiest way is to take the KRL Commuter Line from Tanah Abang Station or other stations along the Rangkasbitung Line. The train ride to Rangkasbitung Station takes around two and a half hours. From there, visitors can take an angkot, an ojek (motorcycle taxi), or book an online ride through services like Gojek or Grab. The drive from the station to the shrine takes another 20 to 30 minutes. Drivers are generally familiar with the route, and clear signs guide visitors to the grotto.

For those traveling in groups or with elderly family members, renting a minibus or chartered van from the station may be a more comfortable option. There’s also ample parking near the site for private vehicles and tour buses.

The grotto itself is a peaceful hilltop site where a statue of the Virgin Mary stands inside a natural stone cave. Visitors walk along a pathway that leads gently upward, with the Stations of the Cross set along the way. The journey up becomes a personal moment of prayer and reflection for many. At the top, people light candles, offer flowers, and sit quietly in prayer. The gentle breeze, rustling trees, and birdsong create a perfect backdrop for spiritual contemplation.

Though the site is clearly Catholic in nature, its appeal extends beyond religious boundaries. Many come simply for the calm and the beauty of the place. The view from the hilltop, the shaded walking paths, and the simple joy of being surrounded by nature offer a rare escape from the noise of everyday life.

For Catholics, though, the experience of being at Gua Maria Bukit Kanada is especially meaningful. During the Marian month of May, and on major feast days such as the Assumption or the Immaculate Conception, the site becomes alive with prayer and song. Groups from across Banten and Jakarta arrive early to join the rosary, attend Mass, and walk the hill together. Even outside of these special dates, weekend visitors are common, especially those seeking quiet time for spiritual reflection.

Many pilgrims bring offerings—flowers, rosaries, candles—and spend time in personal prayer. Others join scheduled Masses and group prayers. The chapel near the grotto provides a space for these services, while rest areas and simple facilities make the site comfortable for both short visits and longer stays.

Visitors often describe their experience as deeply healing. The natural beauty of the area and the sacredness of the grotto combine to create a sense of peace that lingers long after the visit. Whether they come to pray, to reflect, or simply to find silence, most leave with a renewed sense of calm and a stronger connection to their faith.

For first-time visitors, mornings are often the best time to go, as the air is cooler and the site is less crowded. It’s recommended to dress modestly out of respect for the sacred nature of the location. Bringing drinking water and wearing comfortable shoes is also a good idea, especially since the paths can involve some walking.

Gua Maria Bukit Kanada has become more than just a religious site. It is a space where faith, tradition, and nature meet—offering something beautiful and meaningful for everyone who comes. In a world filled with noise and distractions, this hilltop shrine reminds us of the importance of stillness, devotion, and spiritual rest.

For anyone living in or visiting Greater Jakarta, this peaceful sanctuary is just a train ride away. It may not be far in distance, but the journey to Gua Maria Bukit Kanada is one that touches the heart, bringing visitors closer to God, to nature, and to themselves.
