TheIndonesia.co - Nestled in the heart of the Indonesian archipelago, Bali is more than just an island of idyllic beaches, verdant rice terraces, and vibrant culture. It’s a sanctuary—a place where travellers from around the world come not only for leisure but also to restore balance in their bodies and minds. Increasingly, Bali is being recognized as a premier destination for wellness and holistic health, offering an array of experiences that promote peace, vitality, and healing.
At the heart of this movement is the Indonesian government’s serious commitment to positioning Bali as a global wellness destination. Spearheaded by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Ni Luh Puspa, this vision was reinforced with the launch of the Bali Wellness and Beauty Expo 2025, held from June 27th–29th at the Bali Beach Convention. The event marks a pivotal step in uniting stakeholders across the health, tourism, and wellness sectors to showcase the island’s abundant resources and potential in the growing global wellness market.
Why Bali? A Natural Fit for Wellness Seekers
Bali’s unique energy has long drawn travellers seeking more than a typical holiday. Here, ancient traditions blend seamlessly with natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for those looking to reconnect with themselves.
According to Antara News Agency, Ni Luh Puspa stated that more than 23% of travellers already visit Bali with wellness as their primary motivation, and many others engage in wellness activities such as yoga, spa treatments, and clean eating while vacationing, even if that wasn't their original purpose.
The island offers a comprehensive wellness experience that spans the physical, mental, and spiritual. From yoga and meditation retreats nestled in serene jungles to luxurious spa experiences and detoxifying hot springs, Bali is well-equipped to help visitors slow down and reset.
Ubud: The Heart of Healing
No discussion of wellness in Bali would be complete without mentioning Ubud, the island’s spiritual and cultural hub. Located in central Bali, Ubud is famed for its calming ambiance, lush landscapes, and deep-rooted connection to Balinese tradition.
Here, travellers can join daily yoga and meditation classes led by internationally certified instructors in open-air studios surrounded by jungle or overlooking rice paddies. Retreat centers like The Yoga Barn, Fivelements Retreat, and Como Shambhala Estate offer programmes ranging from mindful movement and detoxing to silent retreats and plant-based nutrition.
In Ubud, wellness is not a luxury—it’s a lifestyle. Local cafés and restaurants serve organic, farm-to-table cuisine, often featuring vegan or raw food options. Visitors can also take part in cooking classes that emphasize traditional Balinese recipes made from local ingredients, promoting a deeper connection to food and health.
World-Class Spas and Holistic Resorts
Bali’s reputation as a spa haven is well-deserved. In 2009, it was awarded “The Best Spa Destination” by readers of a global travel publication, a title it continues to uphold. From simple beachside massages to opulent spa experiences in jungle resorts, the island offers treatments that combine local herbs, ancient healing techniques, and modern therapies.
Holistic resorts across the island, such as Bagus Jati in Tegallalang and Maya Ubud, offer customized wellness packages that include daily yoga, balanced nutrition, spa therapies, and consultations with wellness experts. These resorts often integrate Balinese healing rituals, sound therapy, acupuncture, and nature immersion practices like “forest bathing”, allowing guests to experience true physical and emotional rejuvenation.
Natural Healing: Hot Springs, Sacred Waters, and Forest Bathing
Beyond structured programs, Bali offers countless opportunities for natural healing. One of the most cherished is soaking in volcanic hot springs, such as those at Toya Devasya near Mount Batur. Rich in minerals, these waters are believed to aid in detoxification, relieve stress, and promote circulation.
Similarly, travellers can visit the sacred Tirta Empul Temple, where Balinese Hindus and international visitors partake in water purification rituals in the holy springs. Surrounded by lush jungle and the soothing sounds of nature, this experience is both spiritually and physically cleansing.
Forest bathing, or “shinrin-yoku,” takes on a magical quality in Bali. With rainforests, bamboo groves, and cascading waterfalls at every turn, walking mindfully through nature becomes an act of healing. Trails around Munduk, Sidemen, and Tegallalang offer particularly immersive experiences, inviting you to slow down and breathe in the richness of the earth.
The Government’s Vision: A World-Class Wellness Destination
At the heart of the Bali Wellness and Beauty Expo 2025 is a clear and powerful message: Bali is ready to take its place on the global stage as a leading wellness destination.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy supported by the Indonesian government, which has officially inaugurated the Sanur Special Economic Zone (KEK Sanur)—the country’s first KEK focused on integrated health and medical tourism. This development will house cutting-edge healthcare and wellness facilities, merging science and traditional wisdom to offer comprehensive healing experiences.
“This is more than a ceremonial move—it’s a sign of serious commitment,” said Ni Luh Puspa during the opening of the Expo. “We want to create an inclusive global health ecosystem where innovation meets tradition and well-being becomes a shared goal.”
According to data from the Global Wellness Institute, the global wellness sector is expected to grow to \$9 trillion USD by 2028. Indonesia ranks 18th globally and leads Southeast Asia in wellness tourism market share. This leadership position is a testament not only to the country’s rich natural and cultural offerings but also to its readiness to innovate and adapt to global trends.
Building the Ecosystem: Partnerships and Innovation
Co-founder and Director of the Expo, Diah Permana Tirtawati, noted that Bali has long been known for its appeal in leisure, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions), weddings, and marine tourism. However, she believes the time is right to explicitly position Bali as a wellness destination, something that had not been formally declared until now.
“We are now confident to develop wellness tourism through this event,” said Diah. “The response from the industry and the public has been overwhelming. It shows that there is both demand and readiness.”
The Expo brought together wellness service providers, health brands, policymakers, and tourism operators under one roof to exchange ideas, forge partnerships, and co-create offerings that align with travellers' increasing desire for purposeful, health-oriented travel.
A Call to Conscious Travel
Bali’s journey toward becoming the “Best Wellness Destination in the World” is as much about transformation as it is about preservation. Wellness tourism here is not just about offering luxury or pampering, but about encouraging visitors to travel mindfully, respect the environment, support local communities, and return home not just refreshed—but renewed.
As the global appetite for wellness travel continues to grow, Bali stands uniquely poised to lead—rooted in ancient wisdom, rich culture, and natural abundance.
Whether you’re soaking in hot springs under the stars, meditating in a jungle shala, savoring herbal teas made from local plants, or learning to cook wholesome Balinese dishes, one thing is certain: Bali will touch your spirit in a way few places can.
So, for those yearning to find tranquility on the Island of the Gods, Bali invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and embrace wellness in its most beautiful form.
